Tale as old as time, true as it can be, Celine Dion will forever miss her friend Peabo Bryson, who died Tuesday (June 2) after suffering a stroke.

In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer, with whom she recorded “Beauty and the Beast” decades prior, Dion wrote on her Instagram Story that she was “heartbroken to hear that we lost Peabo Bryson today.”

“His incredible voice and his kind spirit embodied the beauty of song and performance,” she continued in a block of text over an old photo of herself and Bryson on the American Music Awards red carpet. “He was so wonderful and generous to me all those years ago … he made me so comfortable, as I was just learning to sing in English. He will remain for me always as a real symbol of the joy that music has brought to my life.”

“His voice and his talent will be missed,” Dion added. “My heart is with your family, and may you rest in peace, Peabo.”

Bryson’s rep confirmed to Billboard on the day of his death that he’d passed away at the age of 75, after suffering a stroke over the weekend. He is survived by his wife and children.

Dion was just 23 when she sang “Beauty and the Beast” with Bryson for Disney’s animated film of the same name. In 1992, the duet reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, on which the late R&B singer notched 12 entries total over the course of his career.

“We are tremendously moved by the outpouring of love, prayers and support from fans, friends and colleagues around the world,” Bryson’s family said in a statement following his death. “While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit.”

Dion is currently preparing for her comeback residency at La Défense Arena in Paris kicking off in September. Her first single in seven years, “Dansons,” dropped in April.
